UPDATE: The Gap in the Hamilton Place Mall is closing its doors for good on January 26th. Channel 3 spoke with Stacey Keating, the Hamilton Place spokesperson with CBL Properties, on this decision.

Keating said that it was a decision by Gap to close. It had nothing to do with their performance. We are told their lease is up and they decided not to renew it.

Earlier this year, Gap made a plan to close more than 200 stores over the next two years.

Keating told us, "It's definitely disappointing to see a store that's been in the mall for such a long time close its doors."

While customers may be sad to see it go, we are told they did not close due to performance, or online sales.

"I don't really think that the Gap to close its doors at Hamilton Place had anything to do with online shopping,” Keating said.

In 2018, Gap stores saw a 5 percent decrease in sales, according to NBC Today.

"Online shopping is definitely something that has increased over the last several years, but brick and mortar shopping is still very strong and vibrant and that's evidence by the fact that many online retailers are actually opening physical stores,” Keating told us.

Keating isn't concerned online shopping will hurt whatever they plan to put in Gap's place. They plan to put something in that will increase mall traffic and sales in Hamilton Place as a whole.

Keating said, "It just gives us another opportunity to bring in a new and exciting use whether that's retail or something else."

They are working to reach an agreement with a company as quickly as possible.

"Our objective is to always minimize the downtime between a store closing a new store opening,” according to Keating.

There are several prospects in the works.

"There's a lot of reason for people to come to Hamilton Place and you know we'll be excited to add another new retailer in the former Gap location as soon as plans are finalized,” Keating said.

Keating said they will let the public know as soon as they reach an agreement.
