Chattanooga hometown heroes honored with Music Pathways Marker
Chattanooga hometown heroes The Impressions were honored by the State of Tennessee with a Music Pathways marker at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center. Sam Gooden and Fred Cash, who both graduated from Howard High School, were joined by Curtis Mayfield's widow Altheida and son Cheaa.
Cash and Gooden, along with their late partner, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003. Mayfield, who died in 1999 was a member of the group from 1958 to 1970. The group's hits include "Amen," "Choice of Colors," "Gypsy Woman," and "People Get Ready."
Cash and Gooden retired in 2017 with a final concert at the Chattanooga Convention Center. Cash told a group of admirers at Tuesday's ceremony, "We have sung the praises of Chattanooga all over the world."
Both surviving members of the group still make their home in Chattanooga.
