Athens fire officials say an apartment fire sent one person to a hospital on Wednesday.

It happened at a complex on South Jackson Street shortly before 1:00 p.m.

Chief Brandon Ainsworth tells Channel 3, an Athens Utilities crew was driving by the complex when they saw three people on the roof.

Chief Ainsworth says the power crew was helping the people get off the roof as firefighters arrived at the scene.

Chief Ainsworth says the fire started on the second floor of the seven-unit complex and firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the other units. Ainsworth says the six other units have water damage.

Chief Ainsworth says one person was burned and taken to Athens Regional Medical Center.

The victim’s name and condition have not been released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
