McKamey Animal Center preparing for influx of adoptions ahead of Black Friday
While many people are prepping for Thanksgiving Day plans, McKamey Animal Center staff members are getting ready for a rush on Black Friday.
"Today's been really busy. People are coming in ahead of Thanksgiving," Development Director Mindy Colin told Channel 3.
It's one of the busiest shopping seasons of the year, and not just for your typical clothing and electronic stores, but animal shelters too.
"As you get closer to the holidays, people start thinking about bringing a pet into their homes," Colin said.
That's why McKamey Animal Center volunteers and staff members are letting people pick their price on Black Friday in one of their largest adoption events of the year.
"We've been full for months. We haven't really seen a big dip in numbers--even since the summer. It's been consistently crowded," Colin explained.
She says they've been doing the event for six years as a way to encourage people to adopt.
"Usually adoption fees range anywhere from $55-$175 depending on the age of the animal. On 'Name Your Price' Day, aside from puppies, people can come in and name their price," she added.
Staff members spent much of Wednesday setting up and getting paperwork in order.
"We're getting all of our adoption packets ready and little bags with food and whatnot," Colin said.
She tells Channel 3 their biggest hope this holiday season is giving dozens of animals their chance at a fur-ever home.
Colin says this year's event will feature tents outside for a speedier check-in process, games and other activities.
She also says they will not 'hold' animals for people who wait until Friday to come in to adopt.
Their goal is to get at least 80 adopted. The event on Friday will be from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
