For many families across the Tennessee Valley, a turkey is not always in the budget.

Members of the freshman senate at UTC will host their annual Turkey Train event Thursday.

Students have been collecting donations all week to buy turkeys for families in need.

Lilah Afflerbaugh is the campus and community engagement chair at UTC.

She said they wanted to raise enough money to buy 10 turkeys this year, but students received enough donations to purchase 21 turkeys.

On Thursday, they will hold their annual Turkey Train event on campus.

"We're going to line up Cardiac Hill at UTC's campus," Afflerbaugh said. "We're going to pass all the turkeys up to the top of the hill, into the van and we're going to send our turkeys off."

She said they partnered with Pneuma Church for their annual Hope Harvest event this year.

The event will be held this Saturday, November 23rd at McClellan Gymnasium on campus.

The turkeys will be passed out to families in need.

"It's important because a lot of them can't afford to have a turkey or a traditional Thanksgiving and by giving them a turkey they are able to get together with family and still have that Thanksgiving environment and atmosphere," Afflerbaugh said.
