The Tennessee Department of Health says it's not too late to get your flu shot. Tuesday, they provided vaccines at absolutely no cost across Southeast Tennessee.

"It is the best way to protect yourself against the flu and we strongly encourage anyone who hasn't gotten their flu shot to get it for free today,” Amanda Goodhard with the Department of Health said.

Flu season is just starting to ramp up. Goodhard says the Fight Flu TN initiative is getting ahead of the game.

"We want to make sure that we have people fully covered so if it is a harsher flu season we have as many people protected as possible,” she said.

The vaccine helps more than people might think.

"It protects not only you, but it protects people around you that can't get their flu vaccine for whatever reason,” Goodhard said.

The vaccine isn't guaranteed protection, but she trusts it to get the job done.

"If you do end up getting the flu and you have had your flu vaccine it's not because you had the flu shot. It's because you've already been exposed to the flu or you just got a different strain,” Goodhard said.

If you missed the event Tuesday, don't worry. Goodhard says your county health department is happy to give out the vaccine anytime.
