UPDATE: Lookout Mountain police say a man who was reported missing was found dead on Thursday night.

Police Chief Charles Wells says 72-year-old John Phillips was last seen around 11:30 on Wednesday night and was reported to be in a vehicle.

Chief Wells says Chattanooga police were called to I-24 West near mile marker 178 around 4:40 p.m. on Thursday when a vehicle was found that matched the description of the one Phillips was driving.

Chief Wells says after a 4-hour search, the man's body was found using K-9 units.

Chief Wells says the Chattanooga police and the Hamilton County Medical Examiner Office are still investigating.

Police have not said if foul play is suspected at this time.

PREVIOUS STORY: Chattanooga police and Lookout Mountain police searched for a missing man on Interstate 24 West on Thursday night.

The search happened near mile marker 178 across from Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute.

A CPD spokesperson says the missing man's vehicle was found on I-24 West in the area of where police are searching.

Chattanooga police are helping Lookout Mountain police with the search.

A name and description of the missing person have not been released at this time.

Due to the search, the right lane of I-24 West were blocked to traffic but have been reopened.
