Chattanooga police say human remains have been found at a development site off Lupton Drive.

State archaeologists believe the bones are incredibly old, but they don’t know exactly how old.

Police say a person called Wednesday night and the Medical Examiner determined the bones are human remains.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) was notified of the discovery, but the agency is not actively helping the site developers or the Chattanooga Police Department at this time.

TDEC officials say it’s up to the landowner on what the next steps are for the project.

Channel 3 reached out to the local archeology firm, Cumberland Applied Research Associates.

However, the firm declined to comment on the situation.

Channel 3 is working to learn more about the discovery.
