The Tennessee Department of Homeland Security identified the busiest DMVs in Tennessee and Chattanooga is on the list.

The list shows the DMV on Bonny Oaks Dr, is in the ten highest volume centers.

In a press release the department said, “Since July 1, 2019, the Department has experienced a significant increase in customer volume at Driver Services Centers across Tennessee due to the issuance of REAL IDs to meet the standards of the REAL ID Act. The REAL ID Act is a federal mandate that goes into effect October 1, 2020. The Department is also expecting additional customer volumes at the Driver Services Centers beginning January, 2020 due to the change in Public Chapter 479 as it relates to the issuance of conceal handgun permits.”

As a result, the Bonny Oaks location will be receiving an additional seven employees. Five of those seven have already reported to work.

On Friday, customers at the location say wait-times were at least an hour long.

Granger Hughes told Channel 3 he already renewed his license but wanted to get a Real ID.

“I've gotta travel to Las Vegas so I figured I'd go ahead and get it and have it over with,” said Hughes.

However, he changed his mind.

“It was a relatively long wait in there so I didn't want to wait too long,” he said. “We'll try the courthouse downtown to see if it's any better.”

Starting October 1, 2020, a Real ID or passport will be required to board a plane or access federal facilities. It is required to apply for the Real ID in person. Renewals can be done online.
