UPDATE: TDOT has canceled the partial ramp closure that was scheduled to take place this weekend on the ramp from I-75 South to I-24 West in Chattanooga.

Due to weather, the contract crews were unable to complete the necessary preparations needed to perform the work this weekend.

The work will be rescheduled to take place at a later date.

PREVIOUS STORY: Traffic will be down to one lane if you're traveling on I-75 South to I-24 west from 9:00 pm Friday to 5:00 am Monday.

"They will be constructing a 12 ft lane and a 12 ft shoulder on the inside area there, close to the interchange itself," said TDOT's Jennifer Flynn.

This disruption in traffic will make construction less disruptive in the future.

"That's the reason we're doing this on the weekend instead of the workweek because we know there won't be that normal rush hour traffic on the weekend," said Flynn.

Flynn reminded drivers to pay close attention, especially after two TDOT workers lost their lives working on a project in Memphis on Wednesday.

"You know these people are out there trying to do a job and they're working for the department of transportation but they're trying to help us improve our transportation system here in the Chattanooga area," said Flynn.

She says drivers should use Brainerd Road or Lee Highway instead of the split. If you absolutely have to drive through there, keep the TDOT workers in mind.

"And if people could just drive through there and pretend like it's your family member out there working," said Flynn. "How would you want people to drive by them?"

The construction at the split is expected to end in June 2021.

PREVIOUS STORY: Work continues on the massive Interstate 75/24 junction expansion, and lane closures will begin Friday night at the I-75/I-24 interchange.

Crews from the Tennessee Department of Transportation will begin lane closures at exit 2 on I-75 South, and the ramp from I-75 South to I-24 West will be reduced to one lane starting Friday at 9:00pm.

At least one lane will remain open at all times allowing traffic to move through the work zone during this partial ramp closure, according to TDOT's Jennifer Flynn.

If you must travel through this area, TDOT suggests drivers pay close attention to the temporary traffic pattern and be prepared to expect delays. Local traffic is advised to avoid the area if possible while this work is underway.

TDOT says the project extends from Spring Creek Road over I-24 to one mile west of the I-75 interchange to East Brainerd Road.

The master plan is to widen the existing roads and ramps, reconfigure I-24 ramps to enter and exit I-75 from the right side, shifting the interchange to the west, and modifying the Welcome Center area traffic circulation.

They say the project also includes new bridges for Spring Creek Road over I-24 and interstate bridges.
