UPDATE: The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) hosted a design public meeting for a proposed project that will focus on widening part of East Brainerd Road.

The purpose of the project is to widen East Brainerd Road from east of Bel-Air Road to near Ooltewah-Ringgold Road in Hamilton County, making it five lanes and adding a bike lane.

TDOT officials shared the preliminary design concept of the project.

They say it could affect more than 200 properties in the area, which had some residents worried.

Max Gerscin grew up off East Brainerd Road 30 years ago. He recently bought his childhood home and remodeled it.

During the remodel, he found bits and pieces of his childhood.

"I was landscaping and I dug up a coffee mug that I broke in the mid-1970s and buried because I didn't want my mom to see it and get mad,” Gerscin said.

But TDOT'S East Brainerd project could have Gerscin and his family looking for another place to live.

"There is a green line running through the house that I grew up in. And it seems they are saying, 'oh yeah, we'll just take it and relocate you.’ That is not an option in my mind right now,” Gerscin said.

Resident Chad Jaynes says with how fast the area is growing, something does need to be done about traffic.

"For the past 10 years, we have experienced tremendous growth in the community, and we have seen these issues coming. Unfortunately, the process for infrastructure changes is very slow moving,” Jaynes said.

TDOT spokesperson Jennifer Flynn says nothing is set in stone with this project.

Officials would have to talk to all property owners who could be impacted. That means all owners living in the 9500 block of East Brainerd.

"We want to do right by every property owner out here,” Flynn said.

Gerscin hopes there are changes to the project. He says you can't put a price on your childhood.

"To me, there is absolutely no monetary compensation that could even come close to the sentimental value that property holds for me,” Gerscin said.

Officials say they will take Thursday’s public feedback and come up with adjustments they feel are necessary.
