Copper Basin had a chance to shock the state Friday night when they hosted South Pittsburg with the region title on the line. The last time the Cougars beat the Pirates was 2014 in the playoffs.

Two early turnovers by Copper Basin set the tone for the road team. South Pittsburg wasted no time cashing both in for scores as they jumped out to a 12-0 lead.

A solid kickoff return from Copper Basin's Chase Mickens put the Cougars deep in Pirates territory. The South Pittsburg defense didn't budge as they turned them over on downs.

The flood gates would open as the Pirates posted a 36-0 halftime lead to cue the running clock.

South Pittsburg wins the region title with a 56-18 victory over Copper Basin. Both these teams will host first round playoff games next Friday.

The Pirates host Jo Byrns at 7 p.m. The Cougars host Gordonsville at 7 p.m. as well.
