Boys recall the moment they found missing Murray County child in creek
A 12-year-old autistic boy is recovering after he was reported missing in Murray County Thursday night.
For the first time, we're hearing from the two boys who found him in a creek.
Murray County Sheriff Gary Langford said hundreds of people showed up to search for Matthew Hopkins, 12, Thursday night.
He was reported missing from the Ball Ground Road area around 6 p.m.
Robbie Lingingfelter said he was searching with his friend Layne Smith when they heard him in a creek.
"I shined my light and we saw him lying in the creek up under some brush, holding onto the brush and he was just holding on," Lingingfelter said.
Smith said he went down to help get Matthew out of the water.
"I pulled him up the bank and threw him over the fence and Robbie went and got the cops," Smith said.
Sheriff Langford said Matthew was transported to a local hospital to be evaluated Thursday night.
He says Matthew was scared but appeared to be in good condition.
"They [family] were all pleased and glad to see it end like this and we are too," Langford said.
