Nikki's Drive Inn on Cherokee Boulevard is a Chattanooga icon, but it could be leaving the Scenic City. When developer Fletcher Bright Co. announced a Northshore condo complex in the works, Nikki’s fate became uncertain.

The Chattanooga staple is on the land the company plans to use. Tuesday, Fletcher Bright took the next step, appearing before the city’s Form Based Code Committee.

The committee heard the company's variance requests. Their main concerns were height and fenestration requirements from the city.

During public comment, no one from Nikki's spoke about whether the restaurant will move locations. The only opposition was an email from a neighbor.

"I have two small children and I have grave concerns about the Nikki's site and seeking a variance to build a 4-story condominium,” that neighbor wrote.

The committee disagreed, saying Fletcher Bright went out of their way to check in with neighbors. They held a neighborhood association meeting that wasn't required.

In the end, the committee approved all but one request, opening the door for the next phase of the project, and leaving Nikki's fate up in the air.
