The GBI is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in Whitfield County on Friday evening.

It happened in the area of Abutment Road at Wood Park Drive in Dalton shortly after 4:30 p.m.

GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles says Whitfield County deputies were called to the area over a man who was reportedly yelling at cars and screaming at people at businesses while he was in the middle of Abutment Road.

Miles says the man refused help from the first deputy to arrive at the scene. Miles says the man would not comply with that deputy's commands to stop or show his hands.

Miles says the man reached for a weapon in his waistband and the deputy again gave verbal commands but the man refused to listen.

Miles says the man tried to draw his weapon a second time, forcing the deputy to fire his service weapon several times.

Miles says the man died at the scene and the deputy was not hurt.

No names have been released.

Miles says the case will be turned over to the Whitfield County District Attorney's Office once the GBI finishes its independent investigation.
