CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Auto burglary victim records suspects trying to steal truck
UPDATE: A string of car break-ins has one Chattanooga neighborhood on edge.
Chattanooga police say seven vehicles have been broken in to off Mauldeth Road in the Stuart Heights Community in 2019.
LT Hunter says some people tried to break in to her husband’s truck early Monday morning, making it the fourth time this has happened since January.
She says everyone in the neighborhood believes this problem has gotten worse.
"They have taken things as simple as chargers, a pair of gloves, or even prescription medication. One guy had the title from his car taken,” Hunter said.
It's a story neighbors in the area have heard over and over.
"The other time I was pregnant on the porch early in the morning, and I watched them from my porch come up. And I could scream at them and it didn't detour them,” Hunter said. "And the next time, I had her in my arms when they came on the property and we hid in the garage.”
Hunter says no matter what they do the thieves keep striking.
"Because it is happening so often that you know there is a good chance when you go to bed that night, somebody's going to be in your vehicle on your property. And that's scary,” Hunter said.
She shared the surveillance video with Channel 3 of Monday’s break in.
The video shows two men getting out of the first car while the driver of the vehicle behind them is keeping an eye out.
Her husband Josh got an alert on his phone from the camera once it detected their movement. He went to the window and started yelling, which made the suspects run away.
Hunter says the neighbors want these criminals to know they're watching them and plan to do whatever they can to put a stop to this.
"I don't want this to be the new normal. You know, it can't be the new normal. This is not the new world we are going to live in and we are going to fight back, to protect our families and to protect our home,” Hunter said.
She hopes more police will patrol the neighborhood.
