UPDATE: Monday night grill fire spreads to Hixson apartments; 2 firefighters treated for heat-related injuries
UPDATE: The Chattanooga Fire Department says that Monday night's fire at the Steeplechase Apartments in Hixson was caused by a grill fire.
CFD says that one of the residents was grilling on the second-floor balcony when the fire spread from the grill to the apartment and attic, and also affected several other units.
Six total apartments were damaged.
Firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire, but two firefighters that had heat-related injuries were treated and released from the hospital.
PREVIOUS STORY: A fire at a Hixson apartment complex sent two Chattanooga firefighters to a hospital and left up to five families without a home on Monday.
It happened shortly before 7:00 p.m. at Steeplechase Apartments in the 1400 block of Cloverdale Circle.
CFD spokesperson Lindsey Rogers says the first firefighters that arrived at the scene saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the back of one of the apartment buildings.
Rogers says Chattanooga police evacuated the complex while crews worked to put out the blaze.
Two firefighters were taken to a hospital with heat-related injuries and no residents were injured.
Rogers says a dog died in the fire, but firefighters were able to save a snake from one of the apartments.
Rogers says four to five families have been displaced.
“The blaze caused heavy fire damage to two upper apartments and the roof. There is smoke and water damage in downstairs units. Two more apartments sustained minor damage,” Rogers said in a press release.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
