Employees of local ambulance service help trash truck driver during fire
Chattanooga Fire Department officials are applauding the quick actions taken by employees at Care Med Ambulance during a garbage truck fire on Monday.
It happened in the 1300 block of Appling Street off Riverside Drive around 2:00 p.m.
Chattanooga Fire Department spokesperson Lindsey Rogers says the driver of a Santek garbage truck had just picked up trash from Care Med Ambulance when the employees saw smoke coming from the top of the truck.
Rogers says the employees flagged the driver down and heard a loud boom as soon as the truck stopped.
Rogers says the driver got out of the truck and started to put out the flames himself using a fire extinguisher. However, the employees stopped the driver because of safety concerns.
The employees started to treat the driver and called 911.
Rogers says the driver was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation.
Chattanooga firefighters arrived at the scene to put out the fire.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
