Whitfield County officials say firefighters are working to remove a body from a pond where a vehicle was found on Wednesday evening.

It happened off Tibbs Bridge Road SE near Creekside Grocery after 4:30 p.m.

EMS director Claude Craig says a passerby noticed the top of what appeared to be a vehicle in a pond and called 911.

Craig says deputies and first responders arrived at the scene to find the vehicle in the pond.

County coroner Greg Bates confirms a body was found in the pond and crews are working to remove it.

Channel 3 spoke to Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood who believes the vehicle has been in the water for an extended period of time.

"Moss has grown up over it, so it's indicating maybe a couple months," said Sheriff Chitwood.

The identity of the body is unknown at this time.

Investigators are working to find out how the vehicle ended up in the pond.
