UPDATE: Dr. James Jones, director of Polk County Schools, says that the water main break is just a symptom of a larger issue. The schools are aging. He says Copper Basin Elementary School is over 50 years old.

He says that this pipe burst on Sunday night.

"One of our workers was over there just passing through doing checks," said Dr. Jones.

He says it's surprised like these that come with old buildings.

"It is very frustrating to deal with old school buildings, very old school buildings," said Dr. Jones. "We need a new school building in the basin area for the elementary school. We need a new middle school and elementary school here on the Benton area."

Dr. Jones says he doesn't know how much this will cost in total, but last year it was a different problem in Benton Elementary School that set them back a significant amount of money.

"Last year it was the cafeteria roof at Benton Elementary School in the form of about $170,000 that was not in our BEP formula or budgeted," said Dr. Jones.

He says until they get new buildings, they will constantly be patching up these schools.

"Yeah it's tough to deal with old school buildings, it's a constant band-aid here and there to try and make it work," said Dr. Jones.

Dr. Jones says voters will get to decide in the 2020 if there will be more funding to help build a new school.

"It would be a tax resolution that will be put on the ballot in the next election that will add taxes towards new school buildings," said Jones.

Copper Basin schools will be back in session on Wednesday.
