ACCORDING TO THE PROSTATE CANCER FOUNDATION, IN THE u.S., 1 IN 9 MEN WILL BE DIAGNOSED WITH PROSTATE CANCER IN HIS LIFETIMEIN RECOGNITION OF PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, A CHATTANOOGA MAN, WHO IS A 5-YEAR SURVIVOR, WANTS EVERYONE TO PAY ATTENTION TO HIS STORY.  

wARREN lAIER WAS DIAGNOSED WITH PROSTATE CANCER NEARLY FIVE YEARS AGO, ON noVEMBER 6. 

"It does make me feel relieved and {have} a better outlook on life," Warren Laier said.

He admits he knows how difficult it can be to convince men to get tested, but he has a message for those who are hesitant.

"Just be responsible if you want to take care of your kids," he said. "If you want to see them grow up, you get checked. This is a deadly killer."

iN FACT, IT IS THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF CANCER DEATH IN American MEN, ACCORDING TO THE aMERICAN CANCER SOCIETYand that is a problem most men don't want to talk about.

Laier says he is pleased some men are now speaking out and saving lives.

"There are many stars and celebrities that have prostate cancer and are dealing with it right now," Laier said. "Rod Stewart just came out and said he had it. Brett Hart, the wrestler, he has had it."

Just this past Saturday, September 14, Rod Steward credited early testing for his recovery.

Laier and his wife, Diane, want others to experience their blessing.

"I enjoy every day," he adds. "I wake up in the morning and I'm blessed with what I have, and I'm just thankful for what God has given me right now.  We look at life better." 

"I'm beyond proud he's always been a people person but now he wants to let everybody every man and female out there know. He wants to spread the word to the men to just get checked and take the blood test," Diane said. 

 "I have known other friends who had prostate cancer, Warren explained. "We have a better outlook on life. And we, especially with my wife, appreciate each other more now than ever."

The Prostate Cancer Foundation says there are a few things you can do to help prevent prostate cancer.

Experts say a healthy lifestyle is important. They recommend eating fewer calories and exercising more. They also recommend eating more fish because it has "good fat" in it, like Omega-3 fatty acids. They say it is important to avoid smoking, and to reduce stress in the workplace and home.
