Fifty-three children were safely evacuated from an East Ridge school bus fire that occurred around 8:00 a.m at the intersection of St Thomas Street and Ringgold Road.

East Ridge Fire Chief Michael Williams says the bus driver had noticed heavy smoke coming from the rear wheel area.

Williams says the firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and found that all the children had been evacuated by the bus driver.

After investigating, crews believe the smoke came from hot brakes.

Williams credits the bus driver for safely evacuating the children.

"I would like to personally recognize the driver of this school bus, she evacuated 53 children and placed them in an orderly fashion away from the bus," Williams said, "She showed compassion for each of these children during event. If this was the bus driver of your children this morning, you should feel confident that your children were in good hands."
