Infant recovering after dog bite in Athens
A 7-month-old baby is recovering after being bitten by the family dog.
It happened around 4:00 Friday afternoon at the home on Estanalee Avenue.
Police say a family member was babysitting the child and was lying on a bed.
Police say the dog, described as a mixed-breed pit bull type dog, was lying on the bed playing with a toy.
The baby crawled to the dog and attempted to touch the dog’s toy and police say that’s when the dog latched onto the child’s head.
According to police, the family member kicked the dog repeatedly, in order the free the child.
Family members took the baby to the emergency room at Starr Regional Medical Center and the baby was transported to a larger hospital for treatment.
The dog’s owner voluntarily turned the dog over to Athens Animal Control.
Police notified the Department of Children and Family Services of the incident and is now investigating, which is standard procedure.
