A man drowned in Marion County while trying to save a sinking boat on Monday night.

It happened around 11:00 p.m. at Bennett Lake, off of Nickajack Lake.

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) officers say 48-year-old Lamar Graham and a friend were at the lake doing some night fishing and checking on Graham's house-boat.

They were backing their fishing boat in the water when they realized it was sinking because it wasn’t plugged. The boat drifted about 40 feet out, and Graham swam out to save it.

The TWRA says Graham was swimming in about 8 feet of water when he drowned.

Graham’s friend, who has not been identified, went out to help after a few minutes. He found Graham unresponsive and brought him back to shore.

First-responders performed CPR, but Graham was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
