UPDATE: Dalton police identify victim in shooting at Motel 6
UPDATE: Dalton police have identified the victim of the shooting at Motel 6 on Saturday.
Police say the victim is 36-year-old Gregory Eugene Walker.
The man who fired, a 23-year-old man, is not being charged. Police say they believe he fired in self-defense.
PREVIOUS STORY: Dalton police are investigating a deadly shooting at a motel early Saturday morning.
It happened around 3:20 a.m. at Motel 6 on Chattanooga Road.
Police spokesperson Bruce Frazier says a man staying at the motel thought the person staying above him in room 226 was making noises.
Witnesses told police the man went up to room 226, started banging on the door and making threatening statements.
Frazier says the occupant of room 226 was armed with a handgun and shot the man several times when he tried to force his way into the room.
The occupant of room 226 provided aid to the man who was shot and a 911 call was made at 3:27 a.m.
The man who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say this appears to be a self-defense shooting and the shooter s cooperating with investigators.
