The Grundy County community is mourning the loss of a 22-year-old who died from an ATV crash.

Cord Barrett was riding a friend's four-wheeler on June 29, when he crashed. He died the next day.

Twenty-three-year-old Jessi Myers had envisioned spending the rest of her life with her boyfriend, Cord Barrett.

"He was the type of guy you'd want to marry," said Myers.

She saw him right before he went riding on the ATV. They planned to see each other again that night.

"He hugged me and kissed me and told me he would for sure make it out in time for the fireworks," Myers told Channel 3.

Barrett never made it. The family laid him to rest last week.

"There was a million people there of course because so many people loved Cord. It was a really sweet funeral," Myers recalled.

She says the community in Grundy County loved him so much, they put together a fundraiser. People raised nearly $20,000 to pay for his funeral.

Myers says they plan on using the leftover money to start a scholarship fund in his name.

"He would have absolutely loved this though and it would have just proved his opinion on this place," said Myers.

Cord was an organ donor. She says it's comforting to know his life will save many others.

"Knowing that parts of him are still out there, that's just absolutely amazing," Myers told Channel 3.

She says Cord made more of a difference in the short time he was here than most people make in a lifetime.

"I'm super blessed that I got the time that I did with him," said Myers.

Barrett would have turned 23 on July 17, 2019.
