UPDATE: The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office says a suspect in an officer-involved shooting was released from the hospital on Friday and booked into the county jail.

A BCSO spokesperson says 49-year-old Steven Ray Handy was booked and released on a $10,000 bond.

The TBI continues to investigate the shooting and no other details have been released.

PREVIOUS UPDATE: According to a press release, that man is identified as 49-year-old Steven Ray Handy.

Authorities say deputies responded to Chilcutt Road in Charleston around 8:30 p.m. Friday. Deputies encountered Handy, who had reportedly made threats against himself earlier in the day. 

"As deputies were speaking with Handy in an effort to get him to surrender, he produced a weapon," the press release stated. "Deputies fired shots, striking Handy in the leg."

Handy was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to survive his injuries.

The Bradley County Sheriff's Office has not released the name of the officers involved. The officers were not injured in the incident.

BCSO Director of Media Adam Lewis says the agency contacted the TBI.

"We reached out immediately to the district attorney's office and requested assistance from the TBI to take over the investigation,” Lewis said. “That's our policy and procedure any time there's an officer-involved shooting. So they are on scene processing the scene at this point."

District Attorney General  Stephen Crump has asked the TBI to investigate. Agents continue to gather evidence and interviews. All findings will be passed along to the District Attorney General for his review and consideration.

PREVIOUS STORY: An officer-involved shooting investigation is underway in Bradley County on Friday night.

BCSO spokesperson Adam Lewis says it happened on Chilcutt Road in the northeast portion of the county.

Lewis says a suspect has been shot and taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

No officers were hurt.

Lewis says the TBI has been called in by the District Attorney to investigate.
