Ooltewah's Smith-Perry Berries previews sunflower fields
Smith-Perry Berries is a joint venture between farmers Aubie Smith and Bill Perry. Both have known each other for more than 30 years. The farm is known for its delicious strawberries and their sweet corn.
In recent years the duo has planted more than thirty acres of sunflowers on their property on Ooltewah-Georgetown Road. Thousands flock there to both take photos and to pick their own sunflowers. This year, Aubie Smith says that they’ll be blooming about a week later than last year because of the lack of rainfall.
"We got the sunflowers planted in about mid-May,” explained Smith. “I think it was the 18th. And they've not had rain on them since we've planted them.”
Smith expects the sunflower fields to bloom by mid-July, right about the same time the sweet corn harvest is expected.
It is free to take photos in the sunflower field but donations are welcome. They will have set prices for the pick-your-own field. You can follow all of their updates on their Facebook page.
