Hayesville senior drowns near "Saddle Dam"
A Hayesville High School senior set to graduate at the end of May has died.
Clay County (NC) deputies were called to the area of the TVA Circle around 3:00 p.m Monday for a drowning. The circle is near the "Saddle Dam" off Hinton Center Road.
Steven Plummer, 17, was with classmates at the time. Eyewitnesses say that Steven was trying to swim from the shore to a pontoon boat a short distance away when he began to struggle at about the halfway point. Several friends say they saw he was in distress and immediately went to his aid but efforts to reach him in time were unsuccessful.
Around 6:20 PM members of the Towns County Dive Team located Steven’s body in about 23’ of water and about 150’ to 200’ from shore, the same general area identified earlier by eyewitnesses.
The local Medical Examiner was on scene and performed a preliminary examination that revealed no contributing factors to Steven’s accidental drowning.
A gofundme account has been set up to help his family.
