UPDATE: Donnie Charles' family called 911 at 8:30 am after finding him dead in the backyard.

"Found by the relatives, the officers responding discovered a campsite not far from where the murder victim was located," said Special Agent Joe Montgomery.

While the Murray County Sheriff's Office deputies were responding, they had already called Murray County investigators, who in turn called the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The Murray County Sheriff's Office and the GBI Calhoun Office consider their relationship tight-knit allowing them to work quickly.

"We were able to move so quickly, that you're talking about finding the body by lunchtime we already someone in jail and in custody," said Montgomery.

A GBI spokesperson says 26-year-old Eric Stewart was arrested for murder and concealing the death of another. Witnesses said Stewart had been camping close to Charles' property.

"They were acquaintances, Mr. Charles had let Mr. Stewart stay at his residence, earlier this year so they were friends and they knew each other," said Montgomery.

Stewart had been released from the Gordon County Jail on Thursday night, Montgomery said he was there on shop-lifting charges.

Both Chief Deputy Jimmy Davenport with the Murray County Sheriff's Office, and Special Agent Montgomery said the community played a crucial part in gathering evidence, and helping them make an arrest.

"It's huge, the community can either shut down a case or break it wide open," said Davenport.

"It was tremendous, the community was so involved out there," said Montgomery. "Mr. Charles didn't have a lot of money but Mr. Charles was one of those people that what little he did have, he kind of gave back to the community."

Now the Murray County Sheriff's Office is doing their best to help walk the community through this process.

"It's tough, it is. It's tough," said Davenport. "We just try to be there when we can, with the family, or neighbors or friends as much as we can."

The results of the autopsy haven't come in yet, stating Charles' cause of death.
