Police: Man charged with DUI after driving through cemetery, damaging and destroying graves
Police say a driver damaged and destroyed a number of graves in a Dalton cemetery Friday morning.
Around 2:00 am, Cliff Erick Sneed was driving a truck on Emery Street near the Georgian Apartments when he failed to go around a curve. The truck left the roadway and entered West Hill Cemetery, where it ran over around a dozen graves and caused heavy damage, police explained.
Dalton officers responded to the scene and asked Sneed to perform several field sobriety tests.
Sneed was then taken into custody and charged with DUI (less safe driver) and failure to maintain lane.
Dalton officers and the Public Works Department are working to determine how many graves were damaged or destroyed. They are also compiling a list of the grave plot owners and next of kin so they can let them know about the damage.
