UPDATE: The body of a man who drowned in the Ocoee River Thursday has been recovered.

Polk County Sheriff's deputies were called to a possible drowning in the river near the Grassy Creek community around 5:45 pm on May 2.

Eyewitnesses told deputies that the man, identified as Brian Bates, 45, was fishing with friends and had been wading in the water.

"At some point Mr. Bates lost his footing and went under the water," the sheriff's office said.

One of Bates' friends tried to pull him from the water but was unsuccessful.

The sheriff's office said Bates was last seen around 50 yards downstream. He went under water and did not resurface.

East Polk County Fire and Rescue and several other agencies responded to the area to search for Bates Thursday night.

Darkness forced them to cancel the search after several hours.

Friday, crews resumed the search at daylight, and Bates' body was recovered around 10:00 am.

"The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Chief Mike Worley and the dedicated members of East Polk Fire and Rescue for their hard work in the search and recovery along with help from Rescue departments from Fannin County Georgia, Cherokee County North Carolina, and West Polk Fire and Rescue," a sheriff's office spokesperson said.
