Local hospital in need of O positive blood; Blood Assurance aiding in supply
A local hospital is short in supply on blood.
More specifically, O Positive blood is needed and Blood Assurance is working to remedy the serious problem.
Jay Baumgartner with Blood Assurance says a patient at a local hospital is using over 95 pints of O positive blood in a day.
That's why he is calling on anyone with this blood type to help.
"We never can predict the next trauma or the next accident. So, we are asking our donors to please come in because one donation make three products and that would save three lives,” Baumgardner said.
And according to Baumgartner, the average person has around 12 pints of blood in their body.
Which meaning this person has been replaced 8 times in the last 24 hours.
"But when you are going through this kind of massive amounts of blood, we need people to come in tomorrow to help us replace it now,” Baumgardner said.
Blood Assurance serves over sixty hospitals in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina.
But Baumgartner says this problem is bigger than just one and it won't take long for others to be in short supply.
"Many of the hospitals this evening will call in and go 'I need two pints of this and four pints of that. And we'd say we can give you half that because it will limit our supply to the other hospitals,” Baumgardner said.
But He says one donation takes little time, and it could give someone in need more.
"That's why we are here. To save lives. Bottom line. This is saving lives. We wanna make sure that the right person gets the right type at the right time,” Baumgardner said.
Blood Assurance will be open tomorrow at both locations from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Their Chattanooga location is at 705 E 4th Street and their Fort Oglethorpe location at 2720 Lafayette Road.
