UPDATE: Whitfield County deputy facing child cruelty charge resigns
UPDATE: The Whitfield County Sheriff's Office said a deputy charged with aggravated assault and cruelty to children has resigned.
A spokesperson for the sheriff's office said Tracy Davis' resignation is effective Friday, May 3.

PREVIOUS STORY: A Whitfield County Sheriff's deputy accused of hitting a child surrendered himself at the Catoosa County jail Thursday morning.
Fort Oglethorpe police say Deputy Tracy Davis is charged with aggravated assault and cruelty to children.
Police say he got angry on Sunday when he met a family member on Battlefield Parkway.
Police say Davis hit the child on the head and upper body before throwing and choking the child.
Davis was released from jail on bond. He is currently on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the on-going internal investigation.
