A sinkhole has opened up along Highway 58.

Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesperson Jennifer Flynn confirmed to Channel 3 that a "small" sinkhole opened in the area of the 9700-9800 block of Highway 58.

The sinkhole was reported to Hamilton County 911 dispatchers around 4:30 pm Wednesday, a dispatch spokesperson said.

Flynn said it is possible the recent rain played a part in the formation of this sinkhole.

"This is an area that has had some settlement in the past," Flynn explained. "The rain probably contributed to the formation of the sinkhole."

TDOT crews are on scene making repairs. Flynn said the sinkhole should be fixed later Wednesday night.

"Our crews are on the scene and will make repairs in the normal way we deal with sinkholes.  They will excavate the loose material and fill it back in with rock to stabilize then repave," Flynn said.

Drivers need to use caution in the area. TDOT crew members will be flagging traffic until the sinkhole is fixed.
