Tuesday, April 2, will mark eight years since Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin was shot and killed in the line of duty.

Sergeant Chapin was killed by an armed robber in a shootout behind a Brainerd Road pawnshop.

The morning of the incident, Sgt. Chapin was sitting at Starbucks on Brainerd Road when he received that final call.

In past years, that Starbucks location has put a tall cup of coffee and a breakfast pastry at Sgt. Chapin’s usual table to serve as a memorial for the fallen officer.

Jesse Mathews, who shot and killed Sgt. Chapin, was transported from Riverbend Maximum Security Institution near Nashville to a prison in Florida in March of 2017.

Mathews will spend the remainder of his life sentence at that Florida prison.
