How did February 2019 compare to Chattanooga's normal climate?
March 1st marks the end of the meteorological winter season, which includes the months of December, January and February, and begins the meteorological spring season, running through May.
Here are some statistics for the past three months, and a look ahead to March.
February 2019 in Chattanooga was a month above normal in both temperatures and rainfall. Our average high was 58.9 degrees, which was about four degrees warmer than typical. There was a larger departure in the low temperatures with the 2019 average at 42.5 degrees, which was 8.5 degrees above normal.
For our highest high temperature during February, we hit a high of 80 degrees. Our lowest low was 30, so we didn't even reach the 20s for the entire month of February.
Of course, with all the rainfall (11.31 inches) we had, especially at the end of February, we finished the month 6.5 inches above normal for rain.
February 2019 was the second wettest February on record in Chattanooga, and those records have been kept since 1879. The wettest February was set in 1939 with 12.3 inches of rain.
Looking at the entire winter season, temperatures and rainfall were above normal for all three months.
The average of both high and low temperatures in December and January were about two degrees above normal. February was much warmer at 6.5 degrees above normal for the month.
Then, for the winter season precipitation, we had a lot of available moisture in the air, but with the warm temperatures, unfortunately, we didn't see much snow this winter. Chattanooga measured only a tenth of an inch in January and a trace in February.
Now, looking ahead to March, there are a few dates to keep in mind. March 10th at 2:00 am is the time to change your clocks by springing forward one hour to Daylight Saving Time. March 17th is St. Patrick's Day, and then spring will officially start on March 20th at the Spring Equinox. That same night will be the full moon during the month of March, called the Worm Moon.
For typical Chattanooga climate in March, 59 degrees is the normal high at the beginning of the month, and March finishes with 69 degrees as the normal high temperature.
Lows will also increase during the month from 37 to 44 degrees, and average precipitation is normally right under five inches.
There is good news for those wanting more sunshine. We will be gaining over an hour of daylight through the month of March.
So, enjoy the spring season ahead, although the winter weather is not completely gone as we will have another cold snap.
