UPDATE: Man, 62, dies after mudslide on Hwy 70 North in Hawkins County
A mudslide in East Tennessee has injured one person and closed a highway.
UPDATE: HAWKINS COUNTY, Tenn. — A 62-year-old man died after a mudslide on Hwy. 70 at Caves Springs Road Thursday morning.
According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol report, Steven Lawson, of Jonesborough, was driving his 1997 Chevy pick-up truck around 1:55 am. when the mudslide occurred. He was traveling south when the roadway began washing away.
His truck rolled 200 feet down an embankment and he died due to injuries he got in the crash, the THP report said.
The road has been closed since.

PREVIOUS STORY: SURGOINSVILLE, TN (AP) - A mudslide in East Tennessee has injured one person and closed a highway.
Hawkins County Sheriff Ronnie Lawson told news outlets that the mudslide occurred Thursday morning on State Route 70 and involved two cars. He said one person was transported from the scene by ambulance. Lawson says the road is blocked off to other traffic.
Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesman Mark Nagi said the agency has engineers on site working on preliminary evaluations of the mudslide.
