UPDATE: Roads, businesses in Dalton reopen following fire caused by lightning
UPDATE: A fire at Plaze, an aerosol packaging company in Dalton, forced an evacuation of the surrounding area on Wednesday.
The fire was reported at 310 Brookhollow Road SE.
Dalton police spokesperson Bruce Frazier says the small fire was coming from a release valve on a propane tank that was hit apparently by lightning.
Firefighters had to evacuate an 800-meter perimeter of the surrounding area as a precaution.
Frazier said, "Several propane tanks are very large, I believe that one is 6-thousand pounds of propane, so you're talking about a lot of fuel and while there is no reason to believe that it would get out of hand.. certainly if it did it would be a very big problem."
Frazier says crews are letting the material burn down and monitoring it for safety purposes.
No injuries have been reported.
All roads and blocked areas around the scene have reopened.
Frazier says businesses that were affected will be allowed to reopen for the third shift if they choose.
