Former Jasper Elementary PTO president indicted on theft charge
A former Jasper Elementary Parent Teacher Organization president has been indicted for stealing PTO funds.
The Tennessee Comptroller's Office said they began investigating after Marion County reported "questionable transactions" in the organization's bank account.
Investigators learned that Amber Bailey stole at least $5,590 between May 2017 - February 2018.
"Bailey made purchases, wrote and cashed PTO checks for her personal benefit, and failed to deposit money collected during fundraisers," a TN Comptroller's Office spokesperson explained.
Bailey kept PTO bank statements and other financial information that should have been reviewed by other PTO officers private.
“PTO’s are required by state law to establish procedures for accounting, controlling, and safeguarding funds,” Comptroller Justin P. Wilson said. “In this situation, the former president had too much individual control over financial matters, and even had a second person sign PTO checks when they were blank.”
Bailey was indicted by a grand jury on one count of theft over $2,500.
