UPDATE: 3 people ejected from SUV in Cleveland crash; THP investigating
UPDATE: The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating a crash in Bradley County that ejected three people on Thursday.
"There were shoes, clothes, everything just strewn everywhere,” Darla Prater recalled seeing after the crash, “Then I heard the lady kind of start yelling out so I walked up in that direction."
Prater was inside a building on Michigan Avenue Road when she thought she heard a transformer explode. She walked outside to see a car crash.
Larry Fister heard the same noise, and also ran outside.
They both immediately ran out and tried to help in any way they could
"Well, I was thinking, are we going to find anyone alive," Fister recalled.
"So, I was just looking to make sure was there anything that I could do but then the police arrived shortly after," said Prater.
A spokesperson for the Tennessee Highway Patrol said according to the preliminary report, a Calhoun police officer tried to pull the car over for speeding, but the car would not stop. A chase began, and the officer canceled the pursuit shortly after.
The car kept going and crashed into a utility pole.
"It could have been so much worse,” said Prater. “I'm very thankful there were no other cars involved. Because as fast as they were going and as busy as this street is it could've very easily involved more people."
Two people were air-lifted to the hospital and an ambulance took the third person.
The road closed for several hours while crews repaired the pole.
Fister said immediately after the wreck around 20-30 people ran over to help.
"That's what happens when somebody is in a bad position," Fister said. "People will come out and they will help."
