UPDATE: One lane of Hixson Pike remains closed while crews repair a gas line.

The Chattanooga Fire Department said a construction company broke into a natural gas lane at the corner of Hixson Pike and Strawberry Lane by accident Wednesday morning.

The leak was reported just before 9:00 am.

"Battalion Chief Carlos Hampton said the workers broke into a two-inch gas line, and the fumes could be seen bubbling up through cracks in the pavement on Hixson Pike," a CFD spokesperson explained.

The gas has been successfully shut off, and crews are working to repair the line.

No one had to be evacuated and no one was injured.
