NASHVILLE (AP) - Authorities say a Tennessee man has been charged with distributing heroin laced with an opioid that may have caused a series of overdoses.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says authorities began investigating last year a series of overdoses involving fentanyl-laced heroin in Middle Tennessee. Fentanyl is a potentially dangerous synthetic opioid.

The Drug Enforcement Administration and authorities from Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, and Nashville conducted undercover drug operations. TBI says the investigation led to 32-year-old Reginald T. Womack, of Old Hickory.

Womack was arrested Friday on a charge of manufacturing and selling a schedule 1 drug. TBI says he was booked into Rutherford County Jail on a $175,000 bond. Online court records did not show Womack's booking information on Monday and it could not be determined if he had a lawyer.
