Officials with the Tennessee Department of Correction say two new Veteran Housing Units have opened at state prisons, including one in Bledsoe County.

The units opened on Friday at Bledsoe County Correctional Complex in Pikeville and at Turney Center Industrial Complex in Hickman County.

TDOC officials say the units will provide services for incarcerated veterans to address their unique and specific issues through partnerships with the Tennessee Department of Veterans Services.

A press release from TDOC says, “The units are modeled after a Behavioral Therapeutic Community that focuses on peer interaction and support to build on the structure and dignity instilled through military service.”

Each unit will also have veterans-centric staff including Veterans Service Officers and a Veterans Justice Specialist.

The Veterans Units currently have a capacity of 182 men.

TDOC officials say the department is looking to expand the program to other facilities later in the year.
