UPDATE: An early morning water main break on Lookout Mountain has been repaired.

The break, which may be attributed to the cold snap, left about 100 customers without water Thursday morning.

"The water main up here sits on a lot of rock so the colder the temperature gets the ground tends to shift," said Tennessee American Water (TAW) Field Service Supervisor, Adam Chrnalogar.

"The main challenge up here is normally getting the water off to make repairs. We had to back up which put a few more people out of water than we would like," said Chrnalogar.

About 30,000 gallons of water running onto the streets combined with the sub-freezing temperatures, made a slick mess on the road. Crews salted the road and created detours to keep drivers safe.

Though this water main break is fixed and warmer temperatures are on the way, there is a chance more breaks could happen.

"Temperatures going from as cold as they've been to a higher temperature can cause shifting," Chrnalogar explained.

According to a spokesperson for TAW, there have been 25 water main breaks this year. In 2018, there were 80.
