UPDATE: Deputy pursuit of vehicle ends in crash near Waterville Elementary School
The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office says a crash near Waterville Elementary School on Tuesday may have been caused by a medical emergency.
BCSO spokesperson Adam Lewis says deputies tried to stop a Steven M. Smith, 59, on Dalton Pike for failing to yield around 2:15 pm.
Lewis says the Smith did not stop leading to a chase where the person being pursued by deputies traveled up to a 100 miles per hour.
Lewis says the Smith hit another vehicle head-on near Waterville Elementary and eventually hit a telephone pole that was a ¼ mile away.
The person who was hit head-on was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.
Lewis says the man deputies were chasing may have been suffering from a medical condition and was flown to a hospital.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
Charges are pending.
