Hamilton County to study schools capacity in preparation for VW expansion
This week, Volkswagen announced an $800-million expansion that could bring hundreds of families to Hamilton County.
The Hamilton County Department of Education plans to study existing school capacity in advance of the expansion.
Officials hope to break ground on the new, previously announced East Hamilton Middle School in the next few weeks.
"And that will be finished before the new production goes online at VW. And you're looking at adding about 1,200 student capacity in the East Hamilton with that school coming online," said spokesperson Tim Hensley.
Harrison Elementary is also getting a new building, adding space for 900 more students.
"So, some capacity is built in, but that may not be enough, “said Hensley, “We'll look at that."
A facilities study is being done to see what the school system needs to add or upgrade.
"This study's really going to help us to prioritize what we need to do right away to make sure that we have enough space for students as we move into the future and to have the best facilities possible to have a good atmosphere for learning for our kids," explained Hensley.
That study is expected to be completed around March.
