Officials from the Georgia Department of Transportation are asking for input from Fannin County residents.

A proposed project to replace the Shallowford Bridge Road over the Toccoa River will be the topic for discussion for the public meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 15 from 4 until 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Fannin County Senior Center, located at 440 West First Street in the city of Blue Ridge.

"We would like to hear the viewpoints and concerns of all area residents," says Grant Waldrop, district engineer at the Georgia DOT office in Cartersville.

GDOT says the proposed plans call for replacing the existing truss bridge on Shallowford Bridge Road and Aska Road over the Toccoa River, located about 9 miles south of the city of Blue Ridge.

The new bridge would be a truss bridge constructed on offset alignment approximately 150 feet south (downstream) of the existing bridge. The new bridge would be two 9-foot lanes with a 2-foot shoulder on the left side and 11-foot 6-inch shoulder (10-foot sidewalk) on the right side. The Benton MacKaye Trail crosses the existing bridge and would be relocated to the new bridge.

"The Georgia DOT strongly believes that since this project is intended to serve the people of Fannin County, the ideas and preferences of these people are important and can make a difference in our planning," Waldrop explains. "This meeting will provide the public with an opportunity to review the proposed project, ask questions and express their preferences."

The open house will be informal and the public is invited to attend. The meeting site is accessible to persons with disabilities. Accommodations for people with disabilities can be arranged by calling Joseph Ciavarro at 678-721-5164.

Written statements on the project will be accepted until Friday, January 25, 2019 and may be submitted to:
