PREVIOUS UPDATE: Chattanooga police are investigating two separate fatal crashes that happened just a few blocks apart from each other Thursday night.

Just after 8:45 pm, officers were called to a fatal crash in the 500 Block of East 23rd Street.

Police say a GMC Safari was trying to merge from the slow lane into the middle lane. At the same time, a semi was traveling in the middle lane and had the right of way. The GMC Safari tried to merge in front of the semi but was unable to pass. The driver of the GMC Safari then slammed on his brakes, lost control and hit the semi, which caused him to spin out and crash into a bridge.

The driver of the GMC Safari, Walter A. Berry, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Around 25 minutes later, officers were called to another fatal crash in the 1400 block of South Holtzclaw Avenue.

A Dodge Ram and a Chrysler TWC collided in the intersection of South Holtzclaw Avenue and East Main Street. The Chrysler TWC rolled over during the collision and struck a utility pole.

Police say two passengers in the Chrysler, 41-year-old Lorenzo Jarret Jr. and 38-year-old Mechele Lane, were killed. The driver, 60-year-old Melvin Tibbs, is in critical condition.

The driver and two passengers in the Dodge fled the scene. One female passenger stayed and was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. She has since been released.
