East TN professor involved in NASA's New Horizons spacecraft historic flyby
Scientists had a different kind of countdown as we approached the new year.
A NASA mission made history as the New Horizons team spacecraft zoomed past an object called Ultima Thule.
It is now the furthest object explored by a spacecraft ever. It's 4 billion miles from the Sun and 1 billion miles from Pluto.
They believe it has been there since the formation of the solar system.
The project has been years in the making, launching in 2006. By luck, the flyby happened on New Year's Eve.
